Paper goldfish lanterns
Paper lanterns made to look like goldfish with Japanese paper stretched over split bamboo frames. Some say that the origin can be traced to a timeframe from the Edo Era to the Meiji Era when they were made based on the “Nebuta” festival floats in Aomori Prefecture.
When summer comes, the Shirakabe area bursts with paper lanterns on display, dazzling the eyes of visitors. They are ranked high among traditional folk crafts nationwide and loved by people as a folk craft tradition representing Yamaguchi Prefecture. Visitors can try making their own lanterns at the “Yanai Nishikura” building in the Shirakabe district.
