This kind of four-story Western style wooden building is a rarity in Japan. Completed in 1879, it is one of the oldest Western style buildings in Yamaguchi Prefecture. This region prospered as a major maritime traffic spot from days of old, and this building was used to entertain and house important guests to the area. The interior includes visually impressive sculptures.
