“Yanaijima” has been favored since days of old as a simple woven cotton fabric. It is said that this fabric first became famous nationwide in the Edo Era. Popularity continued up into the Meiji era, but after that the textile industry started to fade away. In recent years, there has been a movement to revive the yanaijima tradition by groups like “Yanaijima no Kai.” And currently, yanaijima items are sold as Yanai souvenirs in Shirakabe district shops and the like.
